Me: Across the street
I make my way up the street, greeting my neighbors as I pass. We each have our place. The man standing on the corner, the dog growling behind the fence, the old woman picking through the trash.
The girl is new.
Sitting on the library steps, her nose in a book. We all have our ways of escaping madness. This must be hers. I watch for a few minutes. She blinks and turns the page.
The boys on their skateboards race down the street. I pull the old woman out of the way. I do this every night.
I hear a scream.
I turn my head.
The girl is gone.
