Piercing screams broke through the window shattering the hopes of any sleep that I was going to get. I looked outside but couldn't see anything through the smoke. It wasn't safe, I knew that. I had to get out. Running down the hall, I passed the stairs. crowded. Too many people. Too much panic.
I ran to the elevator. It's not the right thing to do, but it's the only thing I could do. I could be trapped but, like every other night, I knew I wouldn't be. I pushed the button and watched seven...eight...nine... would it get here in time? ...eleven...twelve..."Going up?" "DOWN!" ...fourteen...fifteen...come on, come on...seventeen...eighteen...seventeen...sixteen...hurry up...fourteen...I squeeze in. You're no where to be found...twelve...eleven...ten...nine...........
